SmartFoodFriend is an AI-powered recipe generator that helps reduce food waste by creating custom meals based strictly on the ingredients users already have in their pantry.
The app features a robust Android client built with modern Kotlin practices, communicating with a Node.js backend that interfaces with Large Language Models to generate creative, accurate, and structured recipes on the fly.

What we were up against.
People frequently waste food because they don't know what to cook with the random ingredients left in their fridge. Traditional recipe apps require you to search for specific dishes, making it difficult to find recipes that match your exact on-hand inventory.
How we fixed it.
Developed an intelligent assistant where users simply input their available ingredients. The custom Node.js backend processes these inputs through an AI model, returning structured, step-by-step recipes formatted for the Android app. The app caches these generated recipes locally using Room for quick offline access.
